Broken Time / 16 mm blow up to 35 mm / 2011 / Sound / 1:00 min

Like Jeanne d'Arc in front of the scaffold, clueless. Finally, a fight, they come to get her, the
redeeming handshake. Out of the hands, on the hands, that’s how you can read broken time:
because something is eliminated, combed, scratched and lovely caressed. Perhaps the velvet
glove is the connecting through time. For an alliance it´s taken off. Something is sealed: memory
and dream play off against each other, the best fighter will be adopted. And ultimately it burns to
ashes, the famous story, it was all a dream. Maybe she was the boy that she kissed, at least she
resembles him. The image section and traces on the material are covering the secret. Serious men
come up to exterminate her. "Deform Your Dreams" as the only liberation.

Best Experimentalfilm / Jury Statement - Backup Filmfestival Weimar 2012:
„The best experimental film is „Broken time“, directed by Johannes Gierlinger. We
like the nostalgic approach to the avandgarde. This means the dialogic inside the
cinematographic lanuage. The director works in 4 physical ways with sound and images.“

Cinema Next:
„DEFORM YOUR DREAMS“ ist auf einem Filmkader in Broken Time zu lesen. Die Deformation der
Träume geht einher mit der Derformation der Filmspur. Es verschmelzen und verzerren Bilder,
Erinnerungen, Geschichten – und letztlich die Zeit: broken time.

Melbourne International Animation Filmfestival 2013:
Using highly modified strips of live-action film, random glimpses of the everyday get a second
chance to speak to us and exist cinematographically, the way they were originally created to be.

Alanna Simone curator of MIA Screenings at The Armory Center for the Arts, Pasadena:
Broken Time (2011) from Austrian artist Johannes Gierlinger riffs on the cut up films of the Beats
mixing dismembered pieces of footage with text and manipulated celluloid.

Nag Vladermersky, LIAF Director - London International Animation Filmfestival:
Broken Time by Johannes Gierlinger is probably the single most intense and sustained example of
this genre I can ever recall seeing. There isn’t a lazy frame in it; every moment is a rich tapestry
of painstakingly hand-scratched artwork imposed on top of existing live-action footage with a near
flawless sense of balance and juxtapositioning.
